Senate Vote Again Fails to Temporarily Fund Government

The 13th effort also failed to meet the requisite 60 votes.

The Senate voted for the 13th time this week on the continuing resolution that would temporarily fund the government and end the shutdown. The effort again failed to meet the 60-vote threshold to break the filibuster.

The Senate minority has continued to insist on the inclusion of extensions on Affordable Care Act subsidies as a contingency to funding the federal government.

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts said last week, “I mean, shutdowns are terrible and of course there will be, you know, families that are going to suffer. We take that responsibility very seriously. But it is one of the few leverage times we have.”

However, as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are about to end and federal employees go unpaid as the shutdown nears a month, Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota said bipartisan talks have “picked up.”

“Deadlines have a way of doing that,” Senator Thune said of the conversations being held. “There are a lot of rank-and-file members that continue, I think, to want to pursue solutions and be able to address the issues they care about, including healthcare, which… we’re willing to do, but it obviously is contingent upon them opening up the government.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Majority Leader Thune and Minority Leader Schumer as discussions continue on the continuing resolution.
  • For members of the Senate to be prudent in their deliberations regarding government funding and healthcare subsidies.
